The tragic final moments of Anita Rose, a 57-year-old grandmother, have been revealed after she was brutally murdered while walking her dog in Suffolk. Anita set out for her regular morning walk on July 24, 2023, with her springer spaniel Bruce. CCTV footage captured her walking calmly, unaware that a man was following her.
That man was Roy Barclay, 56, a drifter with a violent past and an obsession with the occult. He was on the run from police at the time, having previously been jailed for grievous bodily harm. Barclay launched a 'vicious and brutal' assault, punching, kicking and stamping on Anita. She died four days later from traumatic head injuries.
Prosecutors believe Anita may have seen Barclay breaking into a sewage works and confronted him. After the attack, Barclay stole her phone and pink jacket as a 'trophy', later abandoning the phone to create a false trail. His blood-caked walking boots were identified as the murder weapon.
Barclay had been living off-grid in a makeshift camp near the scene. He was arrested in Ipswich Library on October 21 and denied murder, but a jury at Ipswich Crown Court took just two and a half hours to find him guilty. He was jailed for life with a minimum term of 25 years.
Anita's family spoke of their pain and called for systemic changes to prevent dangerous individuals from remaining at large. Her daughter Jessica said, 'We need to make sure that our communities are safe and that people are monitored... Criminals cannot remain at large.'
