A 27-year-old man has been charged after an A&E doctor was stabbed while on duty at Hillingdon Hospital in west London. Police officers, who were at the hospital following a separate report, responded at around 02:40hrs on Tuesday, 26 May.
The doctor, aged in his 50s, was treated at the hospital for stab wounds. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. Mahdi Abdullahi, of Uxbridge, was arrested and subsequently charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon, and theft of knives.
Abdullahi was remanded to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 27 May. Enquiries into the circumstances continue. The incident comes amid a stark rise in abuse experienced by medical staff, with one in ten UK doctors reporting being attacked by patients or members of the public while on duty.
A Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson said: “We continue to support and reassure our staff following this incident. The safety and well-being of our staff is our highest priority and any form of violence or aggression towards our teams is unacceptable.” Part of the hospital was temporarily closed but has now fully reopened.
