Abandoned Paisley Hospital Deliberately Set Ablaze, Police Investigate
Abandoned Paisley Hospital Deliberately Set Ablaze

Firefighters were called to the former Royal Alexandra Infirmary on Calside in Paisley shortly before 5pm on Sunday, June 28, 2026, after a deliberate fire was set in the abandoned building. Police Scotland have confirmed the blaze is being treated as wilful and an investigation is underway.

The fire was brought under control by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and no injuries were reported. A specialist height appliance was used to tackle flames that were seen burning through the roof. Several streets around the hospital were closed while emergency services responded.

History of Neglect

The Royal Alexandra Infirmary opened at the turn of the 20th century and served as an important part of Paisley's history. It closed in 1987, and while a portion was converted into flats, much of the building was left to decay, making it a frequent target for vandals. This is not the first such incident; a previous fire occurred at the site in March 2022.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Calside at the junction of Neilston Road in Paisley has since reopened following a fire. Around 4.55pm on Sunday, 28 June, 2026, emergency services were called to a disused building in the Calside area. The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. There were no injuries. The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing."

Ongoing Investigation

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was contacted for comment but did not immediately respond. Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward as they continue their investigation into the deliberate fire.
