An investigation is underway after more than 50 decomposing bodies were discovered improperly stored at a Chicago funeral home. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that investigators and forensic pathologists found the remains in various states of decomposition at South Chicago Chapel on Thursday.
Discovery at South Chicago Chapel
The funeral home is located at 2939 E. 95th St. on the city's Southeast Side. Officers from the Chicago Police Department were initially called to assist the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation with a license investigation. Upon arrival, human remains were discovered, and the scene was declared a hazardous material (HAZMAT) incident by the Chicago Fire Department.
Investigation and identification process
The medical examiner's office said investigators are assessing the conditions of the remains and searching for documents, including death certificates, to identify the deceased. This process could take several days to ensure proper disposition. The office will work with authorities to identify the decedents as quickly as possible and notify their families.
Neighbor complaints about odor
The discovery comes after neighbors complained of a foul odor in the area for nearly two months. At times, the stench was so strong that it made it difficult to go outside. One neighbor, Frank Bower, told WGN: "Every time I come through here, I smell a foul smell in the air and I was wondering what that smell was, and I kept thinking maybe it was the sewer."
The Chicago Police Department released a statement confirming that officers responded to assist with the license investigation and discovered the remains. Area 2 Detectives are conducting an investigation. The Mirror has contacted South Chicago Chapel and the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for comment.
