A five-year-old boy has been seriously injured after being attacked by a suspected Staffordshire Bull Terrier in Ashington, Northumberland. Emergency services were called to Maple Street at around 4.30pm on Sunday following reports of a dog attacking a child.
The child is currently being treated in hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Northumbria Police. Officers seized the dog, believed to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, with the owner's agreement, to protect the public.
Police said enquiries into the incident are ongoing and officers remain in the area to offer reassurance. The attack is the latest in a string of dog incidents across the country, many involving XL Bully dogs, which the government has announced plans to ban by the end of the year.
