Motorists have been warned that a £5 item could make vehicles an instant target for thieves, according to James Murdoch, director of Kynekt. Leaving a phone charger plugged into a 12V socket or dangling from a USB port may seem harmless, but Murdoch cautioned that a charging cable is “one of the most dependable” signs that a vehicle may contain technology or gadgets inside.
Why Charging Cables Attract Thieves
The presence of a cable suggests that a phone, tablet, or computer could be on the other side of the glass, which may be tempting enough for criminals to strike. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Murdoch said: “Opportunist thieves don't smash windows at random. They walk car parks and streets looking for signs, and a charging cable is one of the most dependable there is. It tells them a device lives in that car, even if it's out of sight.”
Other Items That Signal Valuables
Murdoch also highlighted other giveaways that a car could be stashed with valuables. Sunglasses cases left on the dashboard can become a temptation, as many drivers use them to stash cash and cards while on the move. Abandoned coats and carrier bags can make it look like you’re trying to hide something, which is likely to attract attention. Even loose change in the cupholder could be tempting, and tools left in vehicles offer a prize for thieves on the prowl.
Advice for Drivers
Murdoch told Express.co.uk: “To a thief, a high-vis jacket is as good as advertising. And the average tool theft costs well over £3,000 once lost work is counted. The best advice I can give is to spend a minute clearing your vehicle before you lock it. Because the less you have on show, the less there is to tempt passing opportunists.”
