At least 27 people have been injured, five seriously, after two trams crashed into each other in the centre of a German city. The collision occurred head-on at an intersection between Berliner Allee and Graf-Adolf-Strasse in Düsseldorf at approximately 11:30am local time.
Emergency Response
Emergency services rushed to the scene and treated 27 individuals. Fortunately, none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The area remains cordoned off as police investigate the incident.
Potential Cause
Initial reports suggest that one of the trams may have been on the wrong track before the collision. Local media indicate this could have been due to a misaligned switch controlling the tracks. Witnesses reported that one tram was attempting to turn left at the junction while the other continued straight.
Details of the Crash
There were 55 passengers onboard the two trams at the time of the crash. The incident unfolded on a busy day in the city centre, as thousands gathered to celebrate Japan Day. Images from the scene show shattered glass windows and one tram derailed.
Disruptions
Multiple tram lines in Düsseldorf remain disrupted, and residents have been advised to use alternative transport methods. Police are continuing their investigation.
