A 17-year-old has been arrested following a shooting in New York City’s Times Square that left three people injured, police have confirmed. The incident occurred early on Saturday morning at around 1:20 am on West 44th Street and 7th Avenue.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) said the shooting followed a verbal dispute between the teenager and one of the victims. Three people were injured: an 18-year-old woman grazed in the neck, a 19-year-old man shot in the right foot, and a 65-year-old man shot in the left leg. All were taken to Bellevue Hospital and are in a stable condition.
Police recovered the firearm used in the shooting. One person is being held in custody, but no charges have yet been filed. Video on social media showed people fleeing the scene and police attending to the wounded.
The shooting comes amid a significant drop in gun crime in New York City. Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch noted that the first seven months of 2025 saw the lowest number of shooting incidents since records began, with 412 incidents recorded between January and July. Shootings were down 23% compared to the same period in the previous year.
