A 13-year-old boy died on Monday afternoon (29 June) after being pulled from the water at the Royal Victoria Dock in east London, prompting a police investigation. Emergency services were called to Dock Road, near Silvertown Way, at approximately 4.07pm following reports of a person in distress in the open water.
Multi-Agency Rescue Operation
A multi-agency rescue operation was launched, involving Metropolitan Police first responders, London Ambulance Service (LAS) crews, the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance. The teenager was recovered from the water by first responders, who immediately administered first aid. Despite extensive medical efforts, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Met has confirmed that the boy's next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. Authorities stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest third-party involvement, and no other injuries or individuals in the water were reported.
Police Appeal for Restraint
Detective Superintendent Scott Ware, head of public protection in north east London, issued a statement expressing condolences and urging the public for restraint. "Our thoughts remain with the boy’s family and loved ones as they come to terms with this tragedy. We kindly ask that their privacy is respected," he said. "We also make a plea to the public to avoid speculation and refrain from sharing distressing material online out of respect for the family and to preserve the investigation." DS Ware added that a formal report is being compiled for the coroner to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
National Water Safety Concerns
The incident underscores a growing national safety concern as rising temperatures draw more people to open water. The recent spike in water-related fatalities includes 15 deaths recorded during the heatwave in late-May, and 9 deaths (including Monday's in east London) recorded during the most recent period of hot weather. This latest incident follows a similar tragedy over the weekend, where Greater Manchester Police confirmed the body of a 15-year-old boy was recovered from open water at Clifton Country Park in Swinton on Saturday. Authorities nationwide continue to issue urgent warnings regarding the hidden dangers of swimming in open water, including unpredictable currents and cold water shock.
