A speeding driver who led police on a 100mph pursuit in his £55,000 Audi was jailed after the car flipped over at a roundabout. Hai Nguyen, 40, survived the crash and tried to escape through a shattered window before being arrested by Cheshire Police.
Pursuit on the M6 and M56
At Chester Crown Court, Nguyen, of no fixed abode, admitted dangerous driving and driving without insurance over the incident on 20th July 2026. He was jailed for a year and disqualified from driving for two years and three months.
The court heard on Monday how officers spotted Nguyen driving a £55,000 black Audi A6 S-Line without insurance on the northbound M6 motorway. At 11.30pm, officers displayed a 'follow me' message in their police vehicle after the Audi was travelling suspiciously.
Officers attempted to get the driver to follow them into Knutsford Services, but the vehicle failed to comply. They again tried to get the Audi driver to follow them off the motorway network at junction 19, but the vehicle again failed to comply, so officers activated their emergency equipment.
100mph on the hard shoulder
The driver accelerated to around 100mph and continued onto the M56 westbound, driving along the hard shoulder. The police video shows an officer in a patrol car behind saying: "He's aware of my presence, he's not reacted so I'm going to have to declare this as a pursuit."
The officer added: "It's an Audi in black, the reason for the stop is no insurance showing on the vehicle and now its manner of driving. It's failed to comply twice to a 'Follow Me'. Occupants, weapons, vulnerabilities are all unknown."
When Nguyen floored his Audi on the hard shoulder safety lane, the police officer reported back: "Pursuit commander, speeds increasing now, 100mph, still hard shoulder one mile from junction 10."
Crash at junction 10 roundabout
The vehicle then exited the motorway at junction 10 of the M56, but was at such high speed when it reached the roundabout at the end of the slip road it flipped and rolled before landing the right way with wreckage everywhere. The following patrol car driver is then heard shouting: "Crash, crash, crash junction 10 roundabout!"
Nguyen was the sole occupant and attempted to climb out of the driver's window before he was detained. A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Nguyen's driving was incredibly dangerous and put other members of the public at risk.
"Thankfully, the roads were quiet at that time of the night, and no other motorists were injured when he lost control of his vehicle. Despite the serious collision, he still tried to climb out of the car window before being detained by our officers.
"Let this be a reminder that the rules of the road are in place for a reason and you will be caught and held accountable if you choose to ignore them."
