Two people have died and one person was injured after a shooting at Fairlane Town Center mall in Dearborn, Michigan, on July 3, 2026. Police have urged the public to avoid the area as the investigation remains active.
Incident Details
The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. local time at the shopping center near Evergreen Road and Michigan Avenue. The mall was busy with families shopping ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend. Video footage shows people running in panic as gunshots rang out, and store shutters were pulled down.
Emergency services responded swiftly, and police surrounded the mall. The Dearborn Police Department stated: "This is an active and ongoing investigation. We are asking residents and visitors to avoid the area while officers secure the scene and investigators conduct their work."
Witness Accounts
Gabrielle, a store owner at the mall, described the sudden chaos: "It seemed like it would be a nice day, the parking lot was fuller than normal with people. I had two young women in the store so we herded them up when we heard the shots, we closed the gate, and went into the backroom. I heard three loud noises, people running, then a couple more shots — it may have been five or six. It was so sudden."
A mother shopping with her daughter said: "It's sad, it is really sad. I'm praying for the families because there were kids in the mall — they will have seen what happened." Shopper Weston Fantroy was buying a birthday present for his daughter when he heard four or five gunshots and saw people panicking, prompting him to flee.
Official Response
Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud urged the public to avoid the area, posting on Facebook: "Please stay clear of Fairlane Mall while police secure and investigate this incident." The investigation is ongoing, and no suspect information has been released. The incident adds to a series of mass shootings in the United States, with over 300 mass shootings recorded in 2026 so far, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
