A man and a woman in their 20s have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a woodland fire near Glossop that started from a campfire. Derbyshire Police said the man, from Bury, and the woman, from Manchester, were released on police bail while enquiries continue.
The fire broke out off Monks Road in Glossop on Saturday, July 18. Fire crews from Glossop, Buxton, Bradwell, and Ashbourne attended, along with two water carriers and two helicopters. Photos shared by Glossop Fire Station showed trees fully alight with towering flames and smoke, and a large area reduced to blackened logs and ashes.
Fire Service Response
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were met with an 'out-of-control fire' in a woodland area subject to a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). Firefighters used water backpacks and beaters to extinguish the blaze.
Glossop Fire Station posted on Facebook that the on-call team attended on July 18 and the fire had 'spread from a camp fire'. On July 20, Glossop Blue Watch attended the same area due to a large fire. They noted that the Tintwistle Wildfire was visible from the location and that this incident 'took multiple resources away from that job in order to try and prevent this spreading to open moorland.'

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: 'Two people both in their 20s, a woman from Manchester and a man from Bury, have been arrested on suspicion of arson and released on police bail while enquiries continue.'
