A woman has been left in a serious condition after a telegraph pole fell onto two pedestrians near a railway station in south Wales. Emergency services were called to Pontyclun railway station at around 1pm on Thursday after the pole collapsed close to the station car park.
Incident Details
Two women were taken to hospital following the incident, which happened on a cycle path beside the station. One has since been discharged, while the other remains in a serious condition. An eyewitness said one of the women, who they described as elderly, became trapped beneath the fallen pole.
Eyewitness Accounts
Members of the public rushed to help the pair before emergency crews arrived, reported Wales Live. A female runner was among those who assisted and stayed with the injured women until paramedics reached the scene.
Emergency Response
Officers from South Wales Police and crews from the Welsh Ambulance Service attended before both casualties were taken to the University Hospital of Wales for treatment.
Investigation Underway
The circumstances surrounding the incident are now being investigated, with the Health and Safety Executive involved alongside police. A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive said: “We are aware of the incident and making initial enquiries alongside colleagues from South Wales Police.”
A National Grid spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident in Pontyclun on Thursday afternoon and are working closely with the emergency services.”
No further details about the women's injuries have been released.
