A 41-year-old woman died following a fall at a UK beauty spot, an inquest has revealed. Rachel Anne Gwilliam, a married woman from West Sussex, was airlifted to a Plymouth hospital after the incident at Pentreath Beach on the Lizard Peninsula on July 20.
Inquest Details
Senior Devon coroner Philip Spinney, presiding over a brief public hearing, disclosed that Rachel Gwilliam was originally from Reading in Berkshire and resided in Billingshurst, where she worked as an accountant. She was admitted to Derriford Hospital after suffering a fall on cliffs at Pentreath Beach. Her condition failed to improve and she died on July 21. The cause of death was confirmed as traumatic brain injury sustained during the fall. Mr Spinney adjourned the inquest, with a full hearing scheduled for a later date.
Emergency Response
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 12:30pm. A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service Foundation Trust (SWASFT) confirmed that the woman was transported to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth by air ambulance, with a land ambulance, two air ambulances, and an operations officer all dispatched to the scene. HM Coastguard also confirmed that crews from Mullion and Porthoustock attended, alongside an RNLI lifeboat from Lizard and a search and rescue helicopter from Newquay.
