A Northumberland man has been charged as part of an investigation into modern slavery. Hargit Bariana, of Plessey Road, Blyth, appeared at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court in Bedlington on Monday, charged with four counts of breaching a court order in relation to modern slavery.
Earlier in July, Northumbria Police received a report of concern for the welfare of a number of people living in the Ashington area. Officers carried out enquiries at properties on Friday, July 17, and four men and a woman were arrested in connection with the report.
Remanded in custody
Bariana has been remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday, August 17. Two men in their 40s have been released on bail pending further enquiries. The third man and the woman have been released with no further action.
Police appeal
Insp Ashley Loader of Northumbria Police said: "Modern slavery has a devastating impact on victims, and court orders play a vital role in managing risk and preventing further exploitation. We will continue to work with our partners to safeguard those at risk and take robust action against anyone suspected of these types of offences."
He added: "I would urge anyone who has been affected by modern slavery or exploitation, or anyone who knows someone who may be a victim, to contact us. Often people don’t realise they are victims of slavery – so it is important in order to tackle this type of crime that we encourage local communities to stay vigilant and alert."
