Four people have been sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court for their roles in an international prostitution ring that trafficked women from Romania to towns and cities across the UK. The operation, which generated hundreds of thousands of pounds, was uncovered after a neighbour in Newport became suspicious of the number of visitors arriving at a property in Bishpool View.
How the neighbour's log exposed the gang
The neighbour began keeping a record of people coming and going from the address in the quiet cul-de-sac, and that log helped expose the organised crime group, whose activities stretched from Wales to the Scottish Highlands. The evidence was presented at Cardiff Crown Court, where the four defendants were sentenced.
The four defendants and their roles
The defendants were George Filip, 45, his wife Ionela Filip, 35, Leonard Banica, 41, and Alexandru Moco, 27. They worked together to traffic women from Romania and organise their movements around the UK, with the women taken to locations including Cwmbran, Hereford, Stoke-on-Trent, Aberdeen and Inverness.
To attract customers, the group advertised the women's services online, posting multiple photographs of them in provocative poses on websites. Members of the operation also managed communications with clients, arranged bookings and handled the bank accounts used to collect payments.
Profits and offshore transfers
Hundreds of thousands of pounds were generated through the prostitution ring, with substantial sums subsequently transferred into offshore accounts by the defendants. Moving the women between different towns and cities allowed the group to advertise their services to customers across several parts of Britain, extending the reach of the operation beyond Newport.
Sentences handed down
All four were sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court, receiving combined prison terms totalling 30 years. Ionela Filip was handed a suspended sentence.
