A man has allegedly confessed to killing and dismembering his friend before scattering the body parts across a Spanish town. Francisco José Agüera went missing during the Covid-19 pandemic, but the case broke open when workers found a bag containing a human head in Coín, Málaga.
Confession and Arrest
The suspect admitted to the Spanish Civil Guard that he killed the victim in his home in Coín. He then dismembered the body and hid the remains at various locations in the area. Detectives solved the case as part of Operation Capibara, and the suspect was arrested on July 28. He reportedly guided police to the exact spots where he had discarded the body.
Discovery of Remains
The case took a dramatic turn in June last year when workers from the Alhaurín de la Torre Town Council found a bag inside a manhole. The workers, who were cleaning an undeveloped plot, realized the bag contained a human head with remnants of hair and several teeth. Forensic analysis took nine months to confirm the remains belonged to Mr Agüera.
Following the suspect's identification, he led police to the location where the victim's remains were found, near Carretera de las Canteras. Detectives also used ground-penetrating radar, drones, and sniffer dogs to locate the remains. Civil Guard sources said criminal databases, document analysis, and court-approved technological methods helped identify the suspect, who was known to the victim.
Legal Proceedings
The man appeared before magistrates at the end of last week, where he chose to remain silent. He was remanded in custody without bail and faces charges of homicide.
Family's Ordeal
Mr Agüera's neighbours grew worried about his disappearance and contacted local police, who then reached out to his sisters. One relative visited his home in April 2020 with officers but found nobody there. His possessions were untouched, and food remained in the refrigerator.
Mr Agüera's sister spoke to Canarias 7, saying: "This is a pain that eats you away, that prevents you from living." She also expressed sympathy for the suspect's family: "The family of the person who did this will also be suffering, and they are not to blame. We have nothing against them."
