Alleged mob boss Daniel Kinahan woke up in Ireland's most secure jail this morning (August 10) – a far cry from the life of luxury he had previously enjoyed in Dubai for the past decade.
The suspected mastermind of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group spent Sunday night in a cell at the maximum security Portlaoise Prison in the Irish midlands after a landmark extradition and dramatic court appearance.
Fresh off a flight onboard an Irish Government jet, he sat quietly in the dock as three judges of the Special Criminal Court heard details of the charge against him during a brief sitting in the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin.
High-Profile Arrival
Kinahan, who was dressed in a black hoodie and black tracksuit bottoms, was then whisked off to Portlaoise Prison in Co Laois, where he will likely remain until his trial. He spent the night on a landing to himself in the prison's A Block.
It is capable of accommodating eight inmates, but has been cleared for the high-profile arrival of the man named by authorities as the leader of a cartel said to control about a third of Europe's cocaine supply.
He arrived at the prison so late on Sunday that the doctors who usually assess all new committals were not on duty. He was instead interviewed by a nurse in an attempt to assess any physical or mental health problems.
Prison History and Security
Portlaoise was synonymous with terrorist inmates during The Troubles – mostly from the Provisional IRA – who were such a security risk the Defence Forces were assigned full-time to the jail.
As organised crime has replaced terrorism as Ireland's top security concern, the cells in Portlaoise have been all but emptied of paramilitary members.
And it now houses gangland figures including Sean McGovern – referred to as being Kinahan’s right-hand man – and members of the rival Hutch gang, with whom the Kinahan OCG has a murderous feud with.
A new gym, said to be slightly bigger than a box room in a house, and a library have been installed on the wing to ensure Kinahan avoids having to mingle with other inmates amid fears an attempt could be made on his life.
It is expected that Kinahan will spend up to 20 hours per day in his cell but will have access to the gym and library too when permitted.
Past Incidents at Portlaoise
The prison made headlines in 2023 after a drunken brawl broke out. It was reported that a booze-fuelled New Years bash resulted in a fight on the C4 landing.
It made headlines again in 2024 after 10 people were rushed to hospital after a mass "synthetic drug” overdose. The white powder was suspected to have been smuggled inside the prison and a number of people were left in critical condition.
Last December, a criminologist who once worked there claimed drugs were a major problem. John Cuffee told radio station Midlands 103: "A lot of prisoners want to get cured. They want their drug problems put behind them — they will do their best.
"If we can’t keep drugs out of the country and out of your nightclub, your local pub, it is going to manifest in prisons. But it is an ongoing battle, and it is a battle prison staff will face and deal with as it comes up."
From Luxury to Lockup
While the facilities will no doubt be better than the prison where he was being held in Dubai ahead of his extradition, it is still a far cry from the life of luxury Kinahan had previously enjoyed in the man-made island, where he had been holed up for the last 10 years.
Kinahan was never again seen in public in Ireland after an attempt on his life in 2016 and operated from southern Spain before settling in Dubai in the UAE, which had no extradition agreement with Ireland.
There, he lived openly and turned MTK Global into a boxing powerhouse. He and wife Caoimhe Robinson, dubbed "Queen of the Molls", lived in a luxury villa just a stone's throw from the Beckhams' Dubai residence.
From their regular table at the Michelin-starred Al Muntaha in the Burj Al Arab to their sprawling seven-bedroom mansion on the Palm Jumeirah, the pair lived a life of unimaginable luxury built on an alleged £1billion drug empire.
They enjoyed £220 tasting menus and £500 Beluga caviar and were the ultimate power couple of the Dubai social scene.
The couple's 2017 wedding at the Burj Al Arab was a grand occasion. Under a massive chandelier, the pair sat on matching thrones while guests, including international drug lords and even heavyweight champ Tyson Fury, looked on.
But that is all a far cry from the new reality of Kinahan, who was pictured being driven to the prison by cops after he appeared in court accused of directing a criminal organisation between the dates of October 18, 2015 and April 6, 2017.
