Alleged crime boss Daniel Kinahan has been extradited from Dubai to Ireland, where he faces charges of directing organised crime, ending a decade-long exile that began after an assassination attempt.
Extradition and Arrival
Kinahan, 49, was flown to Ireland on an Irish government jet on Sunday and taken to Dublin under a massive security operation. He is expected to be charged at the Criminal Courts of Justice before being transferred to Portlaoise prison, a maximum-security facility.
His return was met with tabloid headlines like "Du-Bye!" and "Dan and Dusted," reflecting the long pursuit by law enforcement agencies.
Criminal Empire and Boxing Career
Kinahan is alleged to lead a cartel controlling about a third of Europe's cocaine supply, with sidelines in firearms and racketeering. He also founded MTK Global, a boxing management company, and claimed friendships with champions like Tyson Fury.
In a podcast interview from Dubai, Kinahan said he expected a life sentence, stating, "I think I’ve already got life in prison. And we have to go through the dance now." He denied money laundering through boxing promotion, calling himself a "scapegoat."
Background and Fall from Grace
Kinahan left Ireland in 2016 after a feud with the Hutch gang led to a fatal shooting at a boxing weigh-in. He operated from Spain before settling in Dubai, which had no extradition treaty with Ireland.
In 2022, the US offered a $15m reward for information leading to his arrest, intensifying pressure. Ireland signed an extradition treaty with the UAE in May 2025, leading to Kinahan's arrest in April and the rejection of his appeal last month.
His father, Christopher Kinahan, built the family enterprise in the 1980s, and Daniel was named in a 2009 US diplomatic cable as involved in narco-trafficking.
