Daniel Kinahan, 49, once described as Ireland's 'most wanted man', appeared in Dublin's Special Criminal Court on Thursday evening, hours after being extradited from Dubai. He was charged with directing an organized crime group and remanded in custody.
Kinahan was arrested in April as part of a bilateral agreement between Ireland and the United Arab Emirates. He was flown to Ireland on a Government jet, landing at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel just after 6.30pm. A convoy of vehicles with blacked-out windows then took him to the court, where he arrived at 8.10pm wearing a black hoodie and black tracksuit bottoms, flanked by two plainclothes gardaí.
Alleged leader of €1.5bn cartel
Authorities claim Kinahan and his father, Christy Kinahan Sr, led a €1.5 billion international cartel involved in drug trafficking, money laundering, and extortion. The Kinahan Organised Crime Group was founded by Christy in the late 1990s, growing from a Dublin street gang into a global criminal enterprise. Irish courts have ruled the group is a murderous organisation involved in international drug and weapons smuggling.
The cartel's hierarchy allegedly included Christy, Daniel, his brother Christopher Jnr, Bernard Clancy, Sean McGovern, 'Johnny Cash' Morrissey, and Ian Dixon.
Feud with Hutch family
Between 2015 and 2018, a feud with the Hutch crime family resulted in 18 deaths. The cartel has been held responsible for 20 murders in Ireland, Spain, and across Europe. The violence began after a failed assassination attempt on Kinahan at the Regency Airport Hotel in February 2016, which killed ally David Byrne.
FBI bounty and downfall
The cartel's fortunes changed in April 2022 when the FBI offered a $15 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Daniel, Christy Jr, and Christy Sr. Despite the bounty, Spanish-based associates continued coordinating drug operations, and a February 2023 raid in Dublin seized 40 kg of cocaine, over 2,000 containers of nitric oxide, €78,000 in cash, and other equipment.
Kinahan will next appear in court on October 5, with the option to attend in person or via video link.
