A right-wing political commentator in India has been taken into custody after allegedly claiming that some girls enjoy being raped. The comments were allegedly made on YouTube by TG Mohandas, a well-known journalist and presenter from Kerala.
Arrest and Investigation
A team from Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police Station made the arrest on Sunday after Mohandas allegedly made the comments while speaking about the Delhi Jantar Mantar protests. Police inspected his house in Koovappadam for details of his YouTube account and devices that were allegedly used to make the video, The Times of India reports.
Kerala Police said that the videos were posted on his channel and were then circulated on July 24 and 25, 2026. In the video, he allegedly said that the female students taking part in the protests, which were about national exam paper leaks, could be gangraped as a result of being there, but said there would be no complaints because those at the demonstration "like rape".
Bail Granted
He has since been granted conditional bail by the court after being directed to appear before the investigating officer for three consecutive days and fully cooperate with the investigation. He was also told to appear before the police whenever required.
Various provisions were invoked by the police, including sections 192 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 353(1)(b) (statement conducing to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Section 66 (computer-related offences) of the Information Technology Act, and Section 120(o) (causing nuisance through any means of communication) of the Kerala Police Act, reports The Hindu.
Alleged Remarks
In the video posted to YouTube, the commentator allegedly said: "Gangrapes will happen. In this case, there won’t be any complaints as these are people who like being raped. There are women who like being raped, especially leftists, secular, democratic and proletarians. Now, if someone dies during this, they will turn the person into a martyr."
During the remarks allegedly made by Mohandas, he also reportedly said that he would impose a curfew on protestors in Delhi, and would shoot those who didn't adhere to it.
Court Proceedings
The prosecution opposed bail during proceedings. They argued that he is an influential figure, and that could potentially influence witnesses or interfere with evidence if released. The defence argued for his release, citing his age and health, and said the offences invoked were bailable.
