A 15-year-old girl was allegedly gang raped and murdered inside her home in Assam, India. Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the reported attack as investigations continue.
Discovery and injuries
The girl was found dead inside her home on Saturday (August 1). She had fatal head and face injuries, and an iron rod was inserted inside her. The victim is believed to have been raped before being bludgeoned to death with a heavy object.
Arrests and investigation
Officers have arrested five men but are continuing to investigate the circumstances around the alleged attack. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amitabh Sinha told reporters: "The family claims she was sexually assaulted, but we are waiting for the post-mortem report before drawing any conclusions. We are investigating the matter thoroughly."
Protest and demands
The incident led to a major protest, with locals calling for urgent police intervention. On Monday (August 3), furious locals blocked a local motorway and demanded the arrest and strict punishment of the attackers. They caused major traffic congestion and left hundreds of vehicles stranded for several hours.
Hailakandi Police confirmed five people have been arrested and remain in custody. Hailakandi is a town in southern Assam with a population of around 660,000.
