Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn has been found guilty of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, at their Ohio home. The 40-year-old former music pastor fatally shot her twice in the back of the head while she slept on February 16. He had claimed intruders were responsible, but a jury delivered its verdict after deliberating for less than three hours, leaving Flynn sobbing in the stands.
Verdict and Sentencing
Flynn had told authorities he found his 37-year-old wife dead in the bedroom after noticing the garage side door was open. Following the jury's decision, he is due to be sentenced on October 5.
Other Contestants Who Died Tragically
The show has also seen other contestants face tragedy. Nikki McKibbin, a season one finalist who finished third, died on November 1, 2020, aged 42, after suffering a brain aneurysm. Rickey Smith, who finished eighth in season two, was killed in May 2016 when a wrong-way drunk driver struck his vehicle; he was 36.
Mandisa, a season five contestant who finished ninth and later became a Grammy winner, died in 2024 aged 47. Her publicist said she was found dead in her home, and it was later confirmed she died of complications of class III obesity.
More Recent Losses
Michael Johns, an Australian singer who finished eighth in season seven, died on August 1, 2014, aged 35, of dilated cardiomyopathy. Alexis Cohen, who auditioned in seasons seven and eight, died in 2009 at age 25 after a hit-and-run incident. C.J. Harris, a season 13 contestant who finished sixth, died in 2023 at age 31 after a cardiac arrest. Doug Kiker, known as the singing garbageman, died in 2025 aged 32; he had been arrested and charged with domestic violence in 2021. Willie Spence, runner-up of season 19, died in a car crash in Tennessee at age 23.
