The Prince and Princess of Wales have issued a statement following the 'terrible' attack at Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester on Thursday morning. Two people were killed and the suspect was shot dead by armed police, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.
The attack occurred outside the synagogue on Middleton Road at around 9.30am. A car was driven at members of the public and the suspect carried out a stabbing. The suspect did not gain entry to the building and was shot at the scene after police believed he was carrying a device. Bomb disposal services later attended.
William and Kate said: 'Our thoughts are with the victims and the families of the terrible attack at Heaton Park Synagogue.' King Charles also expressed his shock and sadness, saying: 'Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this appalling incident and we greatly appreciate the swift actions of the emergency services.'
Five people, including a security guard, were injured in the attack. Three remain in a serious condition. A huge cordon remains in place, and security has been stepped up across the city. Two people have been arrested at a second police scene nearby.
Witness Chava Lewin, a neighbour of the synagogue, said the suspect began stabbing anyone near him after getting out of the car. 'He went for the security guard and tried to break into the synagogue,' she said.
