Counter-terrorism officers have launched a major investigation after a terrifying incident saw a vehicle deliberately ram into a Manchester synagogue during evening prayers, sending shockwaves through the local Jewish community.
The attack occurred at approximately 7:30 PM on Monday evening at the Hillock Hebrew Congregation in the Broughton Park area. Witnesses described hearing a loud crash as a car accelerated into the synagogue building while worshippers were inside.
Miraculous Escape for Congregation
Remarkably, despite the violent nature of the attack, no serious injuries were reported among the approximately fifteen people present at the time. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that one person received minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
A police spokesperson stated: "We were called to reports that a car had been driven into a building on Bury Old Road. Emergency services attended and it was established the building was a synagogue."
Counter-Terrorism Unit Takes Lead
The North West Counter Terrorism Unit has now assumed control of the investigation, treating the incident as a deliberate act. Police have cordoned off the area around the synagogue as forensic experts examine the scene for evidence.
Local resident David Cohen, who lives near the synagogue, described the moment of impact: "We heard this enormous bang and went outside to see what had happened. There was a car right up against the building and people were coming out looking very shaken."
Community Response and Security Measures
Jewish community leaders have been in close contact with police following the attack, with security around synagogues and Jewish institutions across Manchester being reviewed and strengthened.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews released a statement expressing solidarity with the affected community: "Our thoughts are with all those at the Hillock Hebrew Congregation following this shocking incident. We are grateful that there appear to be no serious physical injuries."
Police have urged anyone with information about the attack or who may have witnessed the events to come forward immediately as the investigation continues.
