White nationalist and right-wing agitators recently descended on Dearborn, Michigan, to hold an anti-Islam rally where they attempted to burn a copy of the Quran. The protest, which took place on 18 November, was dismissed by local leaders as a cheap publicity stunt aimed at generating money and clicks for far-right influencers.
Dearborn, a Detroit suburb with a population of around 110,000, is home to the highest percentage of Arab Americans in the United States, at about 55%. The city has become a repeated target for provocateurs seeking to exploit anti-Muslim sentiment. Previous incidents include a march with a pig's head on a pole at an Arab American fair and regular attempts by Christian evangelists to convert Muslim children.
The latest rally featured Trump-allied influencers such as Cam Higby, Jake Lang, and members of Charlie Kirk's Turning Point USA. Participants shouted racist abuse, unfurled a banner reading “Americans Against Islamification,” and smacked a Quran with a slab of bacon. Lang later attended a Dearborn city council meeting, live-streaming as he yelled at members, “Get the fuck out of my country. We don’t want you here.”
Dawud Walid, director of CAIR-Michigan, said the aim is to “monetize” hate through campaign donations and social media views. “Anti-Muslim bigotry is the only acceptable form of overt bigotry in America and it can reward people monetarily,” Walid said. “Hating Muslims pays financial dividends.”
The controversy stems from a September incident when Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud told right-wing activist pastor Ted Barham that he was not welcome in the city. Right-wing media framed this as a Muslim telling a Christian he is not welcome, omitting context that Barham and his associates have for years tried to convert Muslim children outside schools and parks. Hammoud said his frustration was with a “bad faith actor,” not a whole faith, and stressed that Dearborn is a place where everyone is welcome.
