A far-right supporter has been jailed after directing a Nazi salute and hurling antisemitic abuse at a Jewish man outside a London courthouse. The incident, which took place near Snaresbrook Crown Court in Walthamstow, has been condemned as a shocking display of hate.
The Confrontation
Paul Cooper, 40, from Southport, targeted the victim as he left the court building. Witnesses reported that Cooper shouted racial slurs before performing the offensive gesture. The victim, who was visibly distressed, reported the incident to authorities.
Legal Consequences
Cooper pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment and was sentenced to 12 months in prison. Judge Nigel Peters described the behaviour as "abhorrent" and emphasised that such acts of hatred would not be tolerated.
Community Response
Local Jewish groups have welcomed the sentencing but expressed concern over rising antisemitism in the UK. A spokesperson for the Community Security Trust stated: "This case highlights the need for continued vigilance against hate crimes."
Metropolitan Police confirmed they are treating the incident as a hate crime and urged witnesses to come forward with any additional information.
