A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of plotting a terror attack in connection with the Manchester synagogue assault. He was detained after arriving on an inbound flight to Manchester airport on Thursday and remains in custody for questioning.
The attack occurred on 2 October at Heaton Park synagogue during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Jihad al-Shamie, 35, launched a car and knife attack, killing Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53. Shamie was shot dead by police while wearing a fake explosive belt.
Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts of Greater Manchester Police said: “The loved ones of Mr Daulby and Mr Cravitz have been updated on this development, as have those who were seriously injured in the attack.”
Seven people have now been arrested in connection with the attack, described as the most lethal antisemitic incident in Britain in modern times. A 30-year-old man arrested on 9 October at Manchester airport on suspicion of failing to disclose information that could prevent a terror attack remains on bail. Five others were released without further action.
