Ali Darwich, a 33-year-old gay Muslim influencer with Palestinian and Lebanese roots, hosted an inclusive Iftar dinner in Berlin this week, calling for greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ people across faiths. The event, held at the home of friend Randa Weiser, brought together a diverse group of Muslims, Christians, Germans, and immigrants, both gay and straight.
Darwich, who goes by @alifragt on Instagram, said the meal was intended to send a message that no one can be 'too queer' and that everyone deserves acceptance. He emphasised his own belief in Islam and other religions, but noted that homosexuals often face rejection, not only in Islam but also in Christianity and other faiths.
The influencer shared his personal experience of being ostracised by his family after coming out, including not being invited to Ramadan or family celebrations. He credits his friends for stepping in as a 'chosen family' during that difficult time. His relationship with his mother has since improved.
The dinner comes amid a rise in anti-LGBTQ+ violence in Germany. According to the Association of Counseling Centers for Victims of Right-Wing, Racist and Antisemitic Violence, there was a 40% increase in such attacks across 12 of Germany's 16 federal states in 2024 compared with 2023.
Darwich's friend Haidar Darwish, a Syrian belly dancer and artist, attended the Iftar and noted the increase in hate crimes against various groups, including Muslims, Jews, and queer people. He stressed the importance of showing love and supporting one another through allies and friends.
