Police in Magaluf have arrested a British man and woman, aged 36 and 31, after an alleged "dine and dash" at a restaurant in the Majorcan resort town. The couple reportedly left without paying their bill, which included both food and drinks, after claiming one of the dishes was unacceptable.
Incident escalates at the scene
Officers were called to the restaurant after the couple reportedly left without paying. They were later found in the sea nearby and refused to get out of the water when asked. The couple then reportedly shouted insults and threats at the officers before being arrested.
During the arrest, the couple reportedly banged their heads on the police car as they resisted. It is alleged that the 36-year-old man hit one of the officers, and both suspects are accused of violently resisting police before being taken into custody.
Charges and custody
Authorities said agents had to use "the minimum necessary force and in a proportional manner to control the two involved and avoid further aggression". The couple were taken to official offices of the Civil Guard but "continued with a defiant attitude and reiterated their threats".
They were then taken into custody at a nearby police station. The couple face charges of fraud, serious disobedience, threats and assault against law enforcement officials, with penalties including a potential custodial sentence. Magaluf attracts around one million British tourists every year.
