Aldi has issued a recall for a popular dessert across multiple U.S. states after discovering it may contain pieces of glass, prompting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to elevate the alert to a Class II recall. This classification indicates that consuming the affected product could lead to serious health consequences.
Recall Details
According to an FDA enforcement report, more than 2,800 cases of Specially Selected Vanilla Crème Brûlée were recalled on April 14 due to potential glass contamination. The recall was upgraded to Class II on April 28, underscoring the severity of the risk. The dessert, packaged in 3.6-ounce glass jars, was sold at Aldi stores in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New York, and Virginia.
The affected items, manufactured by Lactalis Canada, carry a use-by date of May 9, 2026, product number 710298-4099100342826, and barcode number 4099100342826. Although no illnesses have been reported, Aldi urges consumers to discard the product immediately or return it to the store for a full refund.
Broader Food Safety Context
This recall is part of a series of recent food safety actions. Last week, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for meat and poultry products containing dry milk powder potentially contaminated with salmonella. This led to recalls of two Mama Cozzi's breakfast pizzas sold at Aldi nationwide, as well as three Great Value frozen pizzas from Walmart. Additionally, Costco recalled Giovanni Rana Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli due to mislabeling that could trigger allergic reactions in shellfish-sensitive individuals.
