Rescue horse Violet has been left with devastating injuries after being attacked by an off-lead dog in a private field near Pontypridd, leaving her co-owners “completely heartbroken and angry.”
Attack Details
The incident is believed to have occurred between 8pm on Monday, July 14, and 8am on Tuesday, July 15, in a private field in Pontypridd. One of Violet’s owners, who spoke to WalesOnline on condition of anonymity, said someone entered the field overnight with a dog that attacked the mare.
Violet suffered severe swelling around her eyes, multiple puncture wounds to her legs, and a deep gash across her back. Vets treated her with antibiotics and sedation, and her back required stapling. The puncture wounds to her leg were too deep internally to stitch or staple externally, requiring regular cleaning and packing to reduce infection risk.
Emotional Toll
“Before this, Violet was the sweetest, kindest mare who wouldn’t hurt a fly,” the owner said. “Now she’s frightened to even go back into her own field – the place where she should feel safest.” The owners described Violet as a rescue horse with a difficult past who had finally found a safe and loving home.
Financial Burden and Community Support
The veterinary treatment has cost over £2,000, prompting the owners to launch a GoFundMe appeal. The fundraiser was initially closed due to criticism but reopened after supporters continued asking how to help. The owners said every donation will go directly towards Violet’s veterinary treatment, wound care, medication, and rehabilitation.
“I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported V so far. Your kindness, generosity and messages of encouragement have meant more than we can ever put into words,” the owner added.
Police Investigation and Appeal
The incident was reported to police, but the owners were told there was insufficient evidence to progress the investigation due to a lack of CCTV covering the stable and field at the time. Additional CCTV cameras have since been installed across the premises. The owners are appealing for anyone with information to come forward, as any new evidence could help police reopen the case.
RSPCA Response
An RSPCA spokesperson said: “This is really sad to hear and our thoughts are with Violet’s owners at this upsetting time. We wish her a speedy recovery. While the vast majority of dog owners take care when their pet is near horses, sadly upsetting incidents can and do happen. That’s why owners have a responsibility to ensure their dogs are under proper control at all times – as even the most seemingly obedient dogs can get distracted and excited by grazing animals.”
