Teacher's Dismissal for Answering Question Raises Free Speech Concerns

Anita Meston, a 63-year-old teacher from Durham, is taking her former employer to court for discrimination after being dismissed for answering a student's question. The case has been highlighted as the latest example of a growing trend where Christians in the workplace face consequences for expressing their beliefs.

Incident at Biddick Academy

Meston had been working full-time at Biddick Academy in Sunderland for six months when she was dismissed by the headteacher. The dismissal came after she answered a student's question during a Year 8 history lesson about the proportionality of the bombing of Dresden at the end of World War II.

During the lesson, a student asked if she was pro-Israel, and she responded that she was. Later, another student asked if she was pro-abortion, and she said she was pro-life, explaining that she held this view because she is a Christian and knew women who regretted abortions.

Dismissal and Legal Action

The following day, Meston was summoned to the headteacher's office, told she was not allowed to give her personal views in the classroom, and informed that her services were no longer required. This happened despite her 28 years of experience and a recently renewed full-time contract.

Alliance Defending Freedom is supporting Meston in her legal action at the employment tribunal. Jeremiah Igunnubole, Legal Counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom in London, argues that the case reflects a broader issue of censorship of religious beliefs in British workplaces.
