PC David Brown, a 39-year-old police officer believed to be based in Dalkeith, Midlothian, was convicted last week of subjecting his ex-girlfriend to a campaign of abuse lasting more than five years. The conviction, under the Domestic Abuse Act (Scotland) 2018, followed a trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court where Brown maintained his innocence.
Details of the Abuse
The charge covered a period from May 2019 to January 2025 at an address in Bonnyrigg. Brown was found to have repeatedly shouted, sworn, and made offensive remarks to his former partner. Allegations including punching household items and doors, brandishing a knife, raising his fist towards her, and uttering derogatory comments about the food she cooked were deleted from the charge. Similarly, allegations that Brown drove slowly past her home and vehicle in both his own car and a police vehicle were also removed.
Outcome and Sentencing
Brown has not been sacked but remains suspended from duty. The case has been deferred for sentencing at the end of July. Chief Superintendent Helen Harrison of Police Scotland condemned Brown's actions, stating they go against "everything the force stands for." She praised the survivor's strength in reporting the crimes, acknowledging the difficulty of reporting such offences, especially when the perpetrator is a police officer.
Chief Superintendent Harrison said: "Brown’s actions go against everything we stand for. Our thoughts are with the victim, and I hope this conviction provides her with some measure of closure. I commend her strength in reporting these crimes and bringing this individual to justice. We understand how difficult it can be to report these kinds of offences, particularly when the perpetrator is a police officer. I would like to reassure the public that all reports are thoroughly investigated, no matter when the offending took place or who is involved. All officers are bound by our Standards of Professional Behaviour, which apply on and off duty. Any instance where an officer fails to uphold our standards will be investigated and appropriate action taken."
Impact and Force Response
The conviction highlights ongoing efforts within Police Scotland to address domestic abuse and maintain public trust. The force emphasized that all reports are thoroughly investigated and that officers are held to high standards both on and off duty. The survivor's courage in coming forward has been commended, and the case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability within law enforcement.
