Woman Scarred for Life After Best Friend Glasses Her in Bar Brawl Over Dog Dispute

A young mother has been left permanently scarred after her best friend attacked her with a glass in a crowded bar in Caerphilly. Megan Smith, 27, was repeatedly struck in the face by Ebony Jones, 26, during an argument over the sale of a dog. The attack took place at the Emporium Snooker Club in Bargoed in February 2023.

In footage of the incident, Jones is seen thrusting a half-pint glass into Smith's face, shattering it dangerously close to her eye, before continuing to rain down blows. Smith required 36 stitches to her face and five to her nose, as well as treatment from a maxillofacial surgeon. She described the pain as 'excruciating' and said she now suffers panic attacks and flashbacks.

Smith said that since the attack, she has been labelled 'Megan Scar' and feels that her identity has been taken from her. The incident also led to the breakdown of her relationship with her partner. 'Ebony has betrayed me in the worst possible way. She has ruined my life,' she said.

At Newport Crown Court, prosecutor Byron Broadstock said the pair had previously been good friends but their relationship had deteriorated over a dispute concerning a dog sold by Smith's ex-husband. Smith asked Jones to leave her alone, but Jones flew into a rage and struck her with the glass. Jones admitted wounding with intent on the day she was due to stand trial.

Jones, described as an aspiring nursery worker and sole carer for her two young children, sobbed in the dock as Judge Hywel James jailed her for 30 months. He also imposed a restraining order banning her from contacting Smith for ten years. 'Custody is required when in a public place an individual uses a glass to strike someone in the face, not once, but up to four times,' he told her.
