A parcel bomb explosion in Monaco on June 29, 2026, injured three people, including Ukrainian-born oligarch Vadim Ermolaev, in what authorities describe as a targeted attack. The incident occurred around 9pm near Place des Moulins in a residential area, marking one of the first bomb attacks in the principality in years.
Victims and Injuries
Three victims were rushed to hospital: Vadim Ermolaev, another adult, and a 13-year-old child, all believed to be from the same family. The backpack bomb was filled with bolts and metal buckshot, causing severe injuries. Monaco’s Minister of State, Christophe Mirmand, stated: "We can presume that the victims were targeted. The investigation will confirm this." Around 50 firefighters and 80 security personnel were deployed.
Not a Terror Attack
Early fears of terrorism were dismissed by officials in an overnight press conference. The attack is now treated as a targeted crime. The suspect remains at large, with CCTV images showing him leaving a bag in the building's lobby before fleeing on foot into France, reportedly in Beausoleil.
Vadim Ermolaev: The Oligarch Victim
Vadim Ermolaev, also known as Vadym Yermolaiev, is a Ukrainian-born businessman and property developer based in Cyprus. He secured Cypriot citizenship in 2019 and renounced his Ukrainian nationality. In 2023, Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council sanctioned him, freezing assets and imposing trade restrictions, as part of a list of around 200 individuals and companies signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Prince Albert II Condemns Attack
Prince Albert II of Monaco called the explosion a "heinous act" in a statement: "The criminal explosion that occurred this evening in Monaco is a shock for the entire Monegasque community. My thoughts go first to the victims, their loved ones and the residents directly affected by this heinous act." He praised emergency services and confirmed cooperation with French authorities.
Investigation and Manhunt
Public prosecutor Stephane Thibault said the suspect was caught on CCTV leaving a package in the lobby. Mirmand added: "We hope to identify the perpetrator and apprehend him quickly." Police have cordoned off the area, and bomb disposal experts are investigating. No motive has been established, but the attack is believed to be targeted.
