Perth Man Pledges Forgiveness After Alleged Stabbing by Fiancée
A Perth man who was allegedly stabbed by his fiancée during what prosecutors have described as a dispute over household chores has made a heartfelt vow to forgive her. The incident has shocked the local community and raised complex questions about domestic relationships and memory.

Western Australia Police were called to a property in the Thornlie suburb at approximately 10pm on Sunday evening. Officers discovered former factory worker Matt Lester, 47, suffering from two stab wounds. His fiancée, Laureen Gaye Sprenger, also 47, was subsequently charged with unlawful wounding with circumstances of aggravation following the alleged attack at the couple's shared home.
Ms Sprenger appeared before Armadale Magistrates Court on Monday, where she was refused bail and remanded in custody. During police interviews, she reportedly expressed frustration with her partner for what she perceived as laziness and a failure to help with household duties. More alarmingly, she allegedly told officers she had previously contemplated stabbing him and threatened that if she saw him again, she would kill him.

Speaking from his Thornlie residence to the Daily Mail, Mr Lester displayed his injuries while expressing profound concern for his fiancée's wellbeing. "I got a reasonable-sized slice to my chest near the collarbone, and another two-inch cut to my shoulder - about 20 staples all up," he described. Despite these wounds, which required treatment at Royal Perth Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, his primary distress centered on separation from Ms Sprenger.
"The only thing that hurts is my heart, I can't sleep, I just miss her so much," Mr Lester confessed. "I'm not worried about anything. I love my missus, and I hope to see her home real soon." He firmly rejected the prosecution's narrative that the alleged attack originated from an argument about chores, instead insisting the entire episode resulted from a tragic misunderstanding.
Blackout Theory and Relationship History
Mr Lester proposed an alternative explanation for his fiancée's behaviour, suggesting her drink might have been spiked. "The whole thing was a misunderstanding, I think she was drugged because I've never seen her like that before," he stated. "That woman can drink me under the table and I've never seen her like this. She completely blacked out."
He recounted the hours preceding the incident as entirely uncharacteristic for his long-term partner. "She was having a drink with a woman up the road. I got a phone call about 9.30pm to come and get her out of the car because she couldn't walk," he explained. "She's never been like that."
The couple met through Facebook six years ago and became engaged in June 2023. They relocated from Brisbane to Perth approximately three years ago to, in Mr Lester's words, "start fresh" and leave past troubles behind. He emphasized that their relationship has not been violent and that neither uses drugs.

Despite the severity of the allegations, Mr Lester maintains the incident is forgivable, particularly as he claims Ms Sprenger has no memory of what transpired. "I just want her to come home, we've been through worse - we'll get through this," he affirmed, referencing their shared history which includes a period when he was remanded in custody for nine months over what he describes as a road rage incident mischaracterized as attempted murder.
The couple share their Thornlie home with five ferrets, two cats, and one dog. Blood splatters remained visible at the property days after the alleged stabbing, alongside Ms Sprenger's engagement ring. "The only reason we're not married is that we haven't gotten around to it, we've been through a lot together," Mr Lester noted.
Background and Legal Proceedings
According to her LinkedIn profile, Ms Sprenger holds a degree from Griffith University and works professionally as a private alcohol and drug counsellor, having previously served as a community support worker. Her social media activity reveals she recently defended the late Charlie Kirk, the American conservative activist shot dead last year, posting: "I honestly don't care about your likes, I have followed and watched Charlie Kirk's videos long before he was recently murdered. That young man is and will continue to be an inspiration."
Ms Sprenger remains in custody and is scheduled to reappear in court via video link on March 3 to seek legal advice.
