Gunman who shot at woman before four-hour standoff jailed for six years
Gunman jailed for six years after Salford standoff

Adam Wass, 36, of no fixed address, has been jailed for six years after shooting at a woman and barricading himself inside a stranger's house in Salford, sparking a four-hour standoff with armed police.

Greater Manchester Police said Wass attempted to shoot at a woman on St Joseph's Drive, Ordsall, on February 1 this year. The weapon misfired and no bullet emerged from the chamber.

Second shot fired as woman took cover

Wass pulled the trigger again as the woman ran and took cover behind a car. That time, a bullet was fired. GMP said Wass then went into a nearby home and threatened a man inside, who fled unhurt.

Armed officers were scrambled at around 8.15pm. Wass, who still had the gun, barricaded himself inside and refused to give himself up.

Arrest after four-hour standoff

Following a four-hour standoff, he emerged and was arrested. Police said it was 'only by sheer luck' that neither of the two people involved suffered serious injury or worse.

Detective Constable Alicia Wood-Potter, of Salford Challenger, said: "Wass is a dangerous individual who is now rightly behind bars."

Police warning on firearms

She added: "He put two innocent people through a terrifying ordeal and it is only by sheer luck that neither suffered serious injury or worse."

"Guns have no place on our streets and we remain relentless in our efforts to remove firearms from our communities and bring those responsible for gun-related crime to justice."

"Fortunately, firearms discharges remain rare in Salford. Every day, officers are working to identify offenders, disrupt criminal activity and recover weapons. Every firearm we take off the streets is a potential tragedy prevented."

Wass pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm when prohibited; and possession of a prohibited firearm under the Firearms Act 1968.
