A 68-year-old grandmother has died after being attacked by two dogs described as XL Bullies while visiting her 11-year-old grandson in Jaywick, Essex. Esther Martin, from Woodford Green, London, was pronounced dead at the scene after police were called to Hillman Avenue shortly after 4pm on Saturday.
Neighbours reported hearing “horrific” screaming lasting 10 minutes. The victim’s daughter, Sonia Martin, said there were eight dogs in the house—six puppies and two adults—and that her mother had previously raised concerns about the animals being dangerous and aggressive. The dogs’ owner allegedly told Ms Martin to put a broom among them to distract them when the puppies started fighting.
Essex Police arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous dog offences. The two dogs involved were destroyed at the scene, and experts will confirm their breed. Chief Superintendent Glen Pavelin praised the bravery of officers and local residents who tried to help.
Ms Martin described her mother as a retired Tesco worker who was “getting her life back together” after the death of another daughter two years ago. She added, “It’s killed our mum and it’s killed our children’s grandmother.” The investigation continues, and police urge anyone with information to come forward.
