Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead at her home after a wellness check, officials confirmed on Thursday. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, 40, has been charged with premeditated murder and tampering with physical evidence, according to Police Chief Brad Mock.
Metayer Bowen, the city's first Black and Haitian American female commissioner, was elected in 2020 and re-elected in 2024. She was appointed to a second term as vice mayor in November. An environmental scientist, she led environmental justice efforts across Florida before serving as commissioner.
She also served as vice chair of the Florida Democratic Party. Party Chair Nikki Fried expressed shock, recalling a recent hug at a leadership summit. 'The world is less bright without her in it,' Fried said.
Stephen Bowen is held at Broward County jail with no attorney listed. Police say there are no other suspects. City Manager Catherine Givens called Metayer Bowen 'the light in every room' and said her death has left hearts broken.
