The death of a woman married to Jill Biden's former husband is being investigated as a possible crime after police discovered her body following a call about a domestic disturbance.
Police Respond to Late-Night Disturbance Call
Linda Stevenson, aged 64, was found unresponsive in the living room of her Oak Hill, Delaware, home late on Sunday night. Officers from the New Castle County Police Department had been dispatched to the residence at approximately 11.16pm in response to a reported domestic dispute.
Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but Stevenson was pronounced dead at the scene. While initial audio from the 911 call mentioned a cardiac arrest, authorities have stated they are treating the incident as suspicious.
A spokesperson for the New Castle County Sheriff's Office confirmed the case is a death investigation, responding to claims from Stevenson's daughter that it was murder by stating: 'No, it is a death investigation.'
Family Claims and Ongoing Investigation
Stevenson's daughter, Christina Vettori, declined to comment in detail when contacted about her mother's passing on Tuesday afternoon. However, she asserted: 'It's still a murder investigation.' She added that she would not like to talk at this time.
Investigators have released few details about the nature of the domestic dispute call or who was involved. No charges have been filed in connection with the death. Detectives from the police division's Criminal Investigations Unit have taken over the inquiry.
To determine the exact cause of death, an autopsy will be conducted by the Delaware Division of Forensic Science. Linda Stevenson is survived by her husband, Bill Stevenson, and her daughter, Christina Vettori, 45.
Connection to the First Lady
The case has drawn significant attention due to Bill Stevenson's past marriage to First Lady Jill Biden. He was married to Jill Jacobs, as she was then known, from 1970 until their divorce in May 1975.
In previous interviews, Bill Stevenson claimed his marriage to Jill Biden ended because she began a relationship with Joe Biden while they were still married. He told the Daily Mail he first suspected an affair in August 1974 and that a friend had warned him the pair were 'getting a little too close.'
Despite the past acrimony, Bill Stevenson found happiness with Linda. He previously told the press: 'If it wasn't for my divorce, I would never have met my wife Linda and she's the greatest thing in my life.'
The investigation into Linda Stevenson's sudden death continues as authorities await forensic results and piece together the events of that Sunday night.
