In 2007, WWE star Chris Benoit committed one of the most shocking crimes in wrestling history, murdering his wife and son before taking his own life. The 40-year-old Canadian wrestler was found dead in his Georgia home alongside the bodies of his wife Nancy, 43, and their seven-year-old son Daniel.
Benoit strangled Nancy and smothered Daniel before hanging himself. He left a Bible next to each body. Police discovered Nancy's body wrapped in a blanket with a Bible nearby, and another Bible was found next to Daniel. Toxicology reports showed alcohol in Nancy's system, but it was unclear if it was present before death or due to decomposition.
Daniel, Benoit's third child, had been sedated with Xanax before being killed, according to post-mortem findings. There were allegations that Daniel suffered from fragile X syndrome, which may have caused domestic tensions. Benoit's colleague Chris Jericho initially believed this, but later stated in his memoir that Daniel did not have the condition.
Further claims suggested Benoit had been giving Daniel human growth hormone, as evidenced by injection marks on his arms. The case remains one of the most haunting in WWE history, highlighting the tragic end of a celebrated wrestler's career.
