Daniel Bannister, the convicted killer who stalked TV personality Cheryl Tweedy, has been moved to a secure psychiatric hospital after being sectioned under the Mental Health Act. The move comes just months before he was due to be released from prison.
From Prison to Secure Hospital
Bannister had spent five months in prison after being sentenced to a year in jail last September for turning up at the home Cheryl shares with her nine-year-old son Bear, for the fourth time. At the time, the court heard that he believed he had been invited by the former Girls Aloud star into her home. He had already been in breach of a restraining order to stalk her further.
Following a meeting between health service workers in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice before his proposed release date, it was decided to place him in the care of staff at a secure hospital. He was forced to return to prison back in January, following his brief release, after he was caught having alcohol in his possession while at his bail hostel, which went against his bail conditions.
History of Stalking and Violence
According to The Sun, he was meant to be released again in June this year to serve the rest of his sentence on licence, but now he is under the care of psychologists and specialist nurses. He started to stalk Cheryl back in January 2024, which continued for a further ten months, as his harassment did not stop even during the death of Liam Payne in October of that year.
Bannister was deemed dangerous after he was convicted of manslaughter in 2012 following the death of Rajendra Patel, and was sentenced to 30 months in prison.
Impact on Cheryl
Cheryl has been left to endure a lot over the years. Aside from the grief she has suffered after losing the father of her son under tragic circumstances, she now faces further agony. According to the US online publication Radar Online, she is said to be distraught after disturbing CCTV footage has reportedly emerged showing Liam during the final hours before his death.
A source told the publication: "For Cheryl, having new details and images from Liam's final hours emerging is absolute agony. Whatever happened between them as a couple, Liam was Bear's father – having those last moments picked apart in public is incredibly painful."
Back in 2021, Cheryl was left inconsolable after her friend and former Girls Aloud bandmate Sarah Harding tragically lost her battle with cancer. Recently, it came to light that she was not in the middle of a bidding war to tell-all about her life in a documentary, contrary to reports claiming she was ready for a huge comeback.
