A champion bodybuilder was allegedly stabbed to death by his girlfriend during a fight in their apartment in Brazil, according to authorities. Valter de Vargas Aita, 41, a former World Fitness Federation runner-up and five-time state bodybuilding champion, was stabbed in the neck, face, abdomen and back on Sunday morning.
Neighbours reported hearing a heated argument before the attack. Gruesome images released by investigators show blood marks across corridors and stairwells as Aita tried to escape before collapsing dead on the stairs of his building in Chapeco, southern Brazil.
Police arrived to find Aita already dead. His 43-year-old girlfriend, who has not been identified, was also stabbed in the fight and taken to hospital in serious condition. She already had an outstanding warrant for armed robbery and murder and was facing a 15-year prison sentence. Police said they will arrest her on suspicion of murder if she survives.
The motive remains unclear. Aita worked as a personal trainer and shared diet and workout routines with thousands of social media followers. The gym where he worked remained closed on Monday as a mark of respect, stating: 'Forever in our hearts.'
