Police have released a photo of a man they would like to speak to after a serious assault took place in east London after England’s World Cup quarter-final match against Norway. An assault happened just after 1am on Saturday, July 12 on Gascoyne Road in Hackney, Met Police say.
Victim left with serious head injuries
A 24-year-old man was involved in an altercation with a group of men after the match. One member of the group then assaulted the victim, who sustained serious head injuries. He was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service where he remains. While he has serious injuries, they are not deemed to be life-threatening, police say.
Investigation ongoing
No arrests have been made, and enquiries are ongoing. Detective Sergeant Steve Rafferty, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a violent assault which has left a young man with serious injuries." He added: "Since launching our investigation, officers have carried out extensive enquiries, including analysing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses. The assault took placed after the England vs Norway World Cup match, and we know that the area was extremely busy at the time. As a result, there may be additional witnesses who can provide crucial information."
"We are releasing an image of a man, who we believe may have important information which could assist our investigation, and I would urge anyone who recognises him to get in touch with police. He’s described as a White man, believed to be in his 20s or 30s, with light brown hair. He was wearing a blue and white England shirt with a navy collar."
"If you were in the Gascoyne Road area during the early hours of 12 July, witnessed the incident, or have any information which could assist our enquiries, please come forward."
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting reference CAD 600/12JUL. Information can also be provided anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
