A woman in her 80s has been left with serious injuries after being struck by a van outside Durham Train Station. The incident occurred shortly after 1pm on Monday, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Emergency Response
The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed that one ambulance crew was dispatched to the scene. The injured pedestrian was transported to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further medical treatment. Durham Constabulary later revealed that the woman sustained serious injuries to her hand and chest.
Traffic and Rail Services
Drivers have been advised to avoid Station Approach while emergency crews remain at the scene. Despite the collision, rail services have not been affected, and pedestrians can still access the station as usual. The force later updated that Collision Unit officers are still on site, and travellers are encouraged to approach the station on foot if possible.
Driver and Investigation
The van driver, a man in his 50s, is not believed to have been injured. Durham Constabulary stated that enquiries are ongoing and further updates will be provided once the area is cleared. A spokesperson for the force thanked the public for their patience.
