Essex Police have confirmed that seven-year-old Musa Ahmed has died from injuries sustained in an incident at West Mersea beach on July 22. The tragedy also claimed the lives of his mother, Shelina Rahman, 41, and his cousin, Sameeha Rahman, 15.
Police confirm death
Musa Ahmed was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the incident. He died on July 29 at Royal London Hospital despite the best efforts of doctors, police said on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by police, his family said: "We would also like to thank the Royal London Hospital intensive care unit team of doctors and nurses who demonstrated outstanding care and dignity for whilst we have been at the hospital."
The family added: "We would also like to thank the whole community for their support and prayers. We would appreciate privacy during this very difficult time."
Eyewitness account
Beverly Smit, a beach hut owner, described seeing a group of people in difficulty on a sandbank when the tide came in. She said she heard the emergency response and went to investigate.
"By that time they were re-sussing the person on the beach, the helicopters were still in the fields," said Ms Smit. She spoke to a day tripper who had tried to help.
"He saw and they were calling for help and the children and adults were out there," the 60-year-old added. "He swam out I think three times. Two of the children he brought back were not in good condition. It's not an easy swim when the tide's coming in, you're swimming against the tide, the water yesterday was particularly quite cold."
It was previously reported that Shelina and Sameeha Rahman died while trying to save Musa.
