A woman in her 80s has been seriously injured after being struck by a van outside Durham train station. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 1pm on Monday, June 8. Police are advising drivers to avoid Station Approach while investigations continue. Rail services remain unaffected, and pedestrians can still access the station.
Details of the Incident
The collision occurred outside the station entrance. The pedestrian, a woman in her 80s, sustained serious injuries to her hand and chest and was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for treatment. The van driver, a man in his 50s, is not believed to have been injured.
Police Statement
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Collision Unit officers remain on scene tonight. Whilst trains are unaffected, drivers are advised to avoid the area, and travellers should make their way to the station on foot if possible. The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and has been taken to hospital. The van driver is not believed to have been injured. Enquiries are ongoing."
Ambulance Service Response
North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed that one ambulance crew was dispatched, and one patient was taken to the RVI for further treatment.
