Dyfed-Powys Police have issued an urgent plea for the public to refrain from sharing video footage circulating online of an incident in Welshpool that is being treated as a murder investigation. The appeal comes after a 49-year-old man died at the scene in Church Street during the early hours of Sunday, June 28.
Officers were called to the location at 1:16 AM, alongside ambulance crews, following reports of an injured man. Despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Arrest and Investigation
A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody as inquiries continue. The investigation is being led by the force's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and major crime team, who are following all available lines of enquiry.
Police have identified a key timeframe of 12:45 AM to 1:15 AM on Sunday, June 28, and are appealing for witnesses who were in or around Church Street during that period. Specifically, they are seeking:
- Anyone who witnessed a disturbance in or around Church Street between these times
- Anyone with mobile phone, video, or dashcam footage of a disturbance or the people involved
- Anyone present on Church Street between these times
- Anyone who can identify any other people who were present at the location between these times
Police Statement
Powys commander, Superintendent Gareth Grant, said: “Not only is this a live investigation, which could be compromised if potential evidential material is being shared, but there is a grieving family at the heart of our enquiries, who we ask the public to respect. They are going through an unimaginable time, and the last thing they would want is for their loved one’s final moments to be passed around as some kind of entertainment.”
He added: “I can assure the community of Welshpool that our CID and major crime team are progressing the investigation, following all lines of enquiry available to them. I would like to thank the members of the public who have come forward with information to assist us, and ask those who might have information that could help the investigation to submit this through the dedicated web page set up for the operation.”
Community Reassurance
Additional police patrols will be carried out in the town centre over the coming days, and these officers will be available to anyone with concerns. A police spokeswoman reiterated the request not to share footage, stating: “Police have been made aware that video footage from the scene is circulating on social media and WhatsApp, and ask that this is not shared further.”
