A woman's unborn baby has tragically died following a car crash in South London after a vehicle being pursued by police collided with the car she was traveling in.

Incident Details

The woman, in her 20s, was a passenger in a car driven by the baby's father, also in his 20s. At around 23:30 on Saturday, June 13, a suspect vehicle fleeing from police crashed into them on Lewisham Way.

The pursuit was authorized after officers spotted cloned number plates on the suspect vehicle, which failed to stop.

Emergency Response

The heavily pregnant woman was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade. Despite medical efforts, her baby did not survive. She remains hospitalized in a stable condition, while the driver of her car was unharmed.

Arrest and Investigation

The suspect driver, a 29-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop, and possession of class A drugs. He was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation is ongoing, and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the death occurring after a police chase.

Detective Inspector Suzanne Quinton from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the mother and father involved, and their family following the tragic loss of their child. Our investigation continues. We would ask anyone with information or footage that could help to please come forward.”
